Samnaun – Snow fun in spring

Samnaun - Schneespass im Frühling

For snow enthusiasts – Samnaun

Samnaun – snow fun in spring. It is a long way to travel to Samnaun. Therefore we decided to go by car to Landquart to park in the Park & Ride. The parking lot is right next to the train station. Also here we gain time. From there we continued by train to Scuol-Tarasp. There we changed to the bus. The ride in the post bus to Samnaun led through tunnels and villages with super narrow roads. The journey was long but pleasant, as the connections worked seamlessly.

Samnaun

Samnaun is a Swiss customs exclusion area in the canton of Graubünden. To get to the village you have to drive through the Austrian customs. In various stores in Samnaun items can be purchased duty free. Whether this is worthwhile, we have not tested. But the gasoline price at the gas stations in the area, was a lot cheaper than ours. Unfortunately our car was parked in Landquart.

Twinliner Samnaun

To reach the ski area and the hiking trails, we take the Twinliner to the top station. The double-decker mountain railroad was put into operation in 1995. It holds about 180 people. The interesting thing about the cable car, are the two floors. We tried both of them. Once at the top, we can also access the Austrian ski resort of Ischgl. The area is huge. Good orientation is required. Here, the ski season lasts until early May. Accordingly, the hardcore ski fans are on the slopes. I can well imagine how it goes on the slopes in the peak season, so the off-season also has its qualities.

Unfortunately, not all winter hiking trails are passable anymore. Nevertheless, an excursion is worthwhile. There are benches along the way to enjoy the view. I grabbed one. The view of the mountain peaks could not be more beautiful. Even the cute marmots have crawled out of their burrows and are sniffing the spring air.

Since duty-free, the lunch menus are also priced accordingly. The menu includes a mix of Austrian and Grisons specialties. Noticeably often the Kaiserschmarren was served. Therefore, we also ordered a portion.

Soon the summer season will start. I will definitely schedule a summer hike.
