Have you already planned your next journey? What about Slovenia? Ljubljana offers a lot of things to do, while visiting the city. A promenade with fancy restaurants, bars and coffee shops can be explored in the old town. The picturesque houses were built during the baroque and art nouveau epoch.
There will be no rush, while exploring the shops and the points of interests, a cool drink is always offered in one of the little restaurants along the riverside.
Slovenia, some highlights
Ljubljana, Castle
The castle can be reached by foot or by a funicular. For families with kids in a stroller or for older people I would recommend to take the funicular as the road might be too steep. Up there, you will catch an awesome view through the city. The castle has been modernized. The architect made a perfect match between old and new. The restaurants, like the Gostilna na Gradu or the restaurant Strelec are popular for weddings. A reservation for dinner during the high season might be a good advice.
Ljubljana, Vodnik Square
The marketplace is located between the dragon and the triple bridge. It’s also a meeting point for locals. Farmers sell there a wide range of seasonal fruits and vegetables. One part of the market is reserved for clothes. Other goods can be bought in the huge building next to the marketplace.
Ljubljana, dinner at the river
Young and old enjoying dinner at the river. During the warm season tables were placed outside, so that everyone can feel the light breeze, while dinning and watching the boats passing by. There are also lots of restaurant in the old town. We have tested some of them and we recommend Marley & Me.
Ljubljana, park Tivoli
For sport activities, bird watching or just relaxing, the park Tivoli will be a great choice. In the middle of the garden, a restaurant with a huge terrace offers drinks and delicious pastries. From there you will have a gorgeous view to the city. What about a cool drink and chat with your best friend over there? Have a try.
Slovenia, a journey to Bled
Many of the trips around Slovenia can be booked in the tourist information center. We decided to book a tour to the lake of Bled and we were very lucky to have Barbara as our private guide. She knows a lot about her country and she showed us different points of interest. A private guided tour is a good choice to get a bunch of information within a short time. The first stop was the former residence of Tito. The terrace of the Vila Bled offers a great view to take some stunning pictures.
One of the best cream cake is served in the restaurant which is located in the Vila Bled. Without tasting that delicious treat, you can never leave Bled, mentioned Barbara. The huge piece is a highlight for sweet tooth, others might share that huge portion.
There is only a short ride by boat to the small island. After climbing 99 stairs to the top a shop with handmade gifts or a museum and chapel can be visited. If you still are hungry, a restaurant is located next to the gift shop. Back to the mainland a trip around the lake is waiting, to digest all the desserts.
Slovenia, wine-growing districts
There are three famous wine-growing districts in Slovenia, like Podravje, Posavja and Primorje. Wines from there can be tasted in the local restaurants around. Please have a try.
Also during the winter season a trip to Slovenia is recommended. The Christmas market in Ljubljana is well known and ice skating on the lake of Bled is an adventure for the whole family.
Ljubljana can be combined with other near by countries and cities for example Trieste or Venice in Italy, Budapest in Hungary or Villach and Vienna in Austria.
