Hiking trail Carona to Morcote

Wanderweg Carona nach Morcote

The endless stairs to Morcote

Hiking trail Carona to Morcote. Good to know: Only for hikers for whom stairs are a sporting challenge. The hike takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Not suitable for strollers. Good shoes are required.

Hiking trail Carona to Morcote – Carona

Starting point is Carona, a small village 602 m above sea level. A little outside there is a lido at a lofty height. If you want to cool off already, this would be the right place. The weather in Tessin could be very hot in summer.

Hiking trail Carona to Morcote – Parco San Grato

In the immediate vicinity is the Parco San Grato. Especially in spring to early summer you can admire the beautiful azaleas, rhododendrons and other plants. The park is open all year round and offers a breathtaking view of Lago di Lugano and the surrounding mountains. We continue through the forest towards Alpe Vicania. In between, the blue lake shimmers through the trees again and again.

Hiking trail Carona to Morcote – Alpe Vicania

When you see the Alpe Vicania, you have reached a milestone. All thirsty hikers can take a break here before tackling the steep descent to Morcote.

Santa Maria del Sasso

The path is stony and steep. So if you don’t like to climb down the stairs, you might prefer the hike in the opposite direction from Morcote to Carona. The steps are really steep. Who wants to guess? About 400 or more flights of stairs lead to Morcote. I gave up counting. But at the first photo spot, you are rewarded with a view of the church of Santa Maria del Sasso. Next to Morcote, this is probably the second favorite spot for vacation photos. The old church Santa Maria del Sasso was rebuilt around 1462 and was adapted again in 1758. Various frescoes and stucco decorate the walls and ceilings.

Hiking trail Carona to Morcote – Parco Scherrer

Garden fans take note. In 1930 Arthur Scherrer acquired in various stages the land that today forms this park. The park is laid out on a slope. There are temples and arbors in the garden and benches and chairs invite you to linger. The higher up you stand, the more impressive the view of Lago di Lugano.

Morcote

The last steps lead directly to the center of Morcote, which is one of the most beautiful villages in Ticino. Depending on the time you have planned, you can have something to eat in the restaurants overlooking the lake. If you’re not hungry, treat yourself to an Italian ice cream.

Photo fans beware. On the lake route, the view of Morcote is incorruptibly beautiful. The scheduled boat leaves for Lugano.

Tip: Hike from Morcote to Carona. If the hike is done in reverse order, the lido in Carona would be the highlight and a welcome cooling. The steps uphill from Morcote to Alpe Vicania have it all.
