Fascination Lake Como

Italianità on Lake Como

Fascination Lake Como. Starting from Zurich, you can be in Italy in a few hours by car or train. If you don’t mind the journey and possible waiting times, you can even get a taste of Italianità over the weekend. Although, if there is always the possibility, I would prefer days during the week, especially now that the summer vacations are about to start.

Lake Como

Lake Como is like a magnet, attracting visitors from all over the world. Driving along the lake, the roads wind through small picturesque villages. Lucky is the one who drives in a small car along the coast. Sometimes you are very close to the masonry of the houses, especially when a car or bus is approaching. We decided to make an overnight stop in Italy, so we can take it easy.

Villa Carlotta

We timed it so that we would be in Tremezzo half an hour before the opening. So we could still choose a parking place nearby. Already one hour later everything is occupied. Early in the morning or in the evening it is more pleasant in the park, because the day trippers usually arrive later or are already gone in the evening. Despite good planning, a group with the car is also already. The first ship at the jetty, brings additional guests ashore. All have the same goal, to visit the Villa Carlotta. Oh dear, now we are standing in line anyway. Fortunately it goes on efficiently and in the park the people distribute themselves.

The garden

The generously laid out park is a masterpiece. Depending on the season, the borders and shrubs bloom in different colors. Even orange and lemon trellises line the paths. The garden is divided into different zones. If you want to see the whole park it takes up to 90 minutes. Old tree stands give a natural shade. This is very pleasant now in summer. The path is laid out in such a way that you can always catch a glimpse of the lake. The dark blue of Lake Como shimmers through the trees. Benches are scattered throughout the garden. We too are tempted to enjoy the view of the lake and take a short break. Now there are already many boats on the water. Wonderful, that’s exactly how summer feels, I think.

Villa filled with art and furniture from the past

Villa Carlotta had been owned by the Princely House of Sachsen-Meiningen since 1850. Princess Carlotta and her husband Georg von Sachsen-Meiningen collected art. Among the works on display are the sculptures by Antonio Canova and the paintings of Francesco Hayez. The furniture is also well preserved and is displayed in the individual rooms. Today, the Villa Carlotta Association is responsible for the restoration work and the preservation of the villa. We will dive into the past and enjoy the view of the lake on the terrace and in the interiors we will marvel at the art and the well-preserved furnishings.

Restaurant

There is a picnic area in the garden. If you have sandwiches and drinks with you, you can eat them there. We also encountered a school class. A few steps away from the villa there is a restaurant. It reminded us of a greenhouse. We took a break there. We were thirsty and hungry. Villa Carlotta is open from March to September, from 9:00 am – 7:30 pm.
