Hike along the Rhine
Dreamy Diessenhofen. We never thought that the path along the border would be so idyllic. The stretch between Diessenhofen to the restaurant Schupfen cannot be topped so quickly. Bicycle tours along the Rhine through fields and forests would be an alternative. However, we decided to take the trail on foot.
Diessenhofen
The small rural town is quickly visited. It is only a few minutes from the train station to the pier. Diessenhofen is dressed up for the tourists. Many beautiful flower arrangements decorate the houses and streets. Down at the landing stage there is a small kiosk where you can get something to eat. Unfortunately, the Rhine boat is not running at the moment, because the water level is much too low. Instead, visitors enjoy the Rhine. Standup paddling, drifting in the current and trips in small boats are now the order of the day.
Diessenhofen, Rodenbrunnen river pool
Not far from the landing stage we come across a museum. Behind the opening in the wall is the Rodenbrunnen bathing establishment with a large sunbathing lawn and a restaurant. In the afternoon the river pool is well frequented. The entrance is free, but there is no lifeguard. Be careful who can’t swim. Not far away we meet a camping site. The hiking trail leads there, directly past the shore. So we get into conversation with the people. The camping site Läui ‘Dschungel’ is for vacationers. The location directly on the Rhine is unique.
Restaurant Schupfen
If you like it romantic, this is the right place for you. The location on the Rhine with the beautiful greenery fits in with the surroundings. A great place for weddings as well. The menu is clear with fresh and local ingredients. Each plate served, looks delicious and tasted great to us. The portions are large. Who would have thought that on a Wednesday at noon the restaurant would be so busy. Reservations are recommended. Since the terrace is closed in winter, we also checked out the restaurant. The view of the Rhine is also given from inside. Wonderful.
Stein on the Rhine, trail by foot
After the restaurant Schupfen, the path no longer leads along the Rhine, but through fields and forest. Ideal for bike tours, less so on foot, we thought. So we decided to walk back to Diessenhofen after a successful lunch and take the train from there. If the water level in the Rhine had been normal, we would have booked a boat trip.
Stein on the Rhine
The village impresses with its historic houses and their facade paintings. Therefore, the place is much visited. We stroll through the alleys and admire the houses before we start our way home by train.
This is a day trip, including Stein am Rhein. Hiking time from Diessenhofen to Stein am Rhein is about 3.5 hours, with photo stops. If you hike only as far as Gasthaus Schupfen, which we recommend, it’s about 2 hours, without a lunch and coffee break.
