Onion market in Berne
‘Zibelemärit’ in Berne. It is the largest market in Berne and takes place every year on the fourth Monday in November. The market is famous for its onion plaits, onion wreaths and onion figures, which are offered by farmers in elaborate wickerwork. In addition to onion products, there are also textiles, jewelry, ceramics and toys. If you are hungry, you can eat at the many food stalls. The market starts at 6 am and lasts until 6 pm.
Artful wickerwork
As one market operator said, the tradition of making elaborate onion plaits is dying out. As a result, the stalls selling onions dwindle from year to year. They give way to other stalls with food, gingerbread and various sweets.
Specialties
Some visitors treat themselves to onion tart, spicy cheesecake or ‘Chnoblibrot’ for breakfast. I also brought an onion tart as a souvenir from the family. You can’t visit the Zibelemärit without onion tart.
As I don’t particularly like the crowds, I set off early. Others probably thought the same. People were already out and about early in the morning.
