Engadin in the off-season

Engadin in der Zwischensaison

Golden larches

Engadin in the off-season. In the fall, the larches in the Engadin glow golden, creating a beautiful natural spectacle. The larch is the only native conifer that loses its needles in the fall and is almost naked in winter, while other fir species such as pines or spruces retain their needles. The larch forests in the Engadin are a particular highlight in autumn and reach their greatest color intensity in mid-October to early November. In the national park, larch is common up to an altitude of 2200 m and forms the forest boundary together with Swiss stone pine and Scots pine.

First snow

After a wonderful summer and fall, it has now also snowed in the Engadin. The paths are still frozen in the morning. However, the icy snowflakes thaw with the midday sun. The mid-season therefore also has an attraction. There are fewer tourists out and about. Unfortunately, many of the restaurants are now on vacation so that they can be ready for the rush of the peak season. You have to plan accordingly for a day trip. With a little practice, this is also possible. As the buses only run every hour during this time, we chose the routes in advance and calculated them roughly. The websites should be checked beforehand so that lunch doesn’t fall by the wayside. This way, the route can be more or less planned. A picnic in the sun on a bench by the lake also has its charm.

The winter season doesn’t start for another few weeks. Nevertheless, we have already enjoyed the snow-covered meadows and mountains. The golden larch trees complete the picture. It won’t be long now before the needles are on the ground. The spectacle of colors is beautiful. Especially at this time of year, a walk along the lakes is relaxing and calming. A walk along Lake Sils and on towards St. Moritz to Lake Staz can easily be done on foot. Depending on the time, you can take the bus for part of the way.

Autumn tour in St. Moritz

  1. Take the bus from St. Moritz to Sils Maria Post
  2. Walk along the lake
  3. Lunch at the Hotel Seraina
  4. Take the bus back to St. Moritz (note the timetable)
  5. Walk to Lake Staz, watch the birds and enjoy the sun on one of the benches
  6. Walk back to St. Moritz railroad station

We really enjoyed the play of colors and the first snow. The OllO World team wishes you a wonderful week.
